Ashs Theorem, Finite Nilpotent Semigroups, and One-Dimensional Tiling Semigroups
This is the manuscript for a talk given at CAUL (19 October, 2001) and also at Northern Illinois University (26 July, 2002). I am grateful to CAUL for their generous support during my visit there in October/November 2001) and to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NIU (in particular to W.D. Blair) for the mini-conference on the occasion my my retirement.
متن کاملStrongly F*-inverse covers for tiling semigroups
We introduce the notion of path extensions of tiling semigroups and investigate their properties. We show that the path extension of a tiling semigroup yields a strongly F *-inverse cover of the tiling semigroup and that it is isomorphic to an HNN * extension of its semilattice of idempo-tents.
متن کاملAutomatic semigroups vs automaton semigroups
We develop an effective and natural approach to interpret any semigroup admitting a special language of greedy normal forms as an automaton semigroup, namely the semigroup generated by a Mealy automaton encoding the behaviour of such a language of greedy normal forms under one-sided multiplication. The framework embraces many of the well-known classes of (automatic) semigroups: free semigroups,...
متن کاملFinite semigroups as categories, ordered semigroups or compact semigroups
The results presented in this section are a good illustration of the following quotation of Marshall Stone [34]: ’A cardinal principle of modern mathematical research may be stated as a maxim: “One must always topologize” ’. Varieties of finite semigroups are a good example where Stone’s principle was applied successfully. Recall that a variety of semigroups is a class of semigroups closed unde...
متن کاملOptimal Tiling
Iteration space tiling is a common strategy used by parallelizing compilers to reduce communication overhead. We address the problem of determining the optimal tile size (which minimizes the total execution time of the program), for a particular program schema. We use a realistic model of the architecture which accounts for coprocessors that permit overlapping of communication and computation, ...
